What the filings show

BCE reported 13 meetings with the federal government in August, according to monthly communication reports in the federal lobbying registry.

The company has recorded 95 such meetings over the past 12 months.

Who BCE met

BCE met Ramiz Razzak, a policy advisor in the Prime Minister's Office, on August 13, 17, 20 and 25. It met Scott Jones, president of Shared Services Canada, on six days during the month, and several officials at Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada: Peter Wall, deputy chief of staff and director of communications; Mark Schaan, associate deputy minister; Jordan Zed, senior assistant deputy minister; Anson Duran, chief of staff; and Anushka Kurian, director of policy.

The company also met Gary Smith, a senior advisor, and Drew Leyburne, an assistant deputy minister, both at Natural Resources Canada, on August 6; Paul Connors (Liberal), a member of Parliament, on August 14; Brian MacKay, deputy chief of staff and director of policy at Canadian Heritage, on August 14; Steven MacKinnon (Liberal), Minister of Transport and Leader of the Government in the House of Commons, and James Christie, director of policy at Transport Canada, on August 21; Dawn Farrell, chief executive officer of the Major Projects Office at the Privy Council Office, on August 24; Jeffrey Li, a policy advisor at Finance Canada, on August 25; and Arianne Reza, deputy minister, and Marc Brouillard, chief information officer and assistant deputy minister, both at Public Services and Procurement Canada, on August 26.

What the meetings covered

The reports listed science and technology as the subject nine times, telecommunications twice, and government procurement and broadcasting once each.

BCE across the public record

Nine members of Parliament reported holding BCE shares: six Liberal and three Conservative. Thirteen provincial legislators also reported holding the stock: three Progressive Conservative members in Ontario, two BC NDP and one BC Green and one Independent in British Columbia, two Ontario NDP members in Ontario, two United Conservative members in Alberta, one Independent in the Northwest Territories, and one Saskatchewan Party member in Saskatchewan.
