Disclosure rules

Ordinary Members of Parliament fall under the Conflict of Interest Code for Members of the House of Commons, allowing them to own shares in public companies, so long as they disclose these assets to the Ethics Commissioner, who makes them public . Cabinet ministers fall under the federal Conflict of Interest Act, requiring them to divest "controlled assets" (ex. shares of public companies) within 120 days of appointment. However, spouses and family members are not covered under this act, allowing them to retain their ownership in public companies.
